120/616 film spool conversion

top to bottom:   standard 60mm wide 120 spool for comparison

                         two 3/4" tap washers

                         70mm wide 616 spool

                          two modified washers

i.e. centres drilled out to 1/4" (6.25mm), the diameter of the 616 core, the overall washer diameter needs to be reduced slightly (see below) and finally then cut on a radius with sharp knife or chisel to enable fitting to the spool core

The new washer is just slightly oversize to the spool ends and needs therefore to be reduced. I did it on the bench sander. An alternative would be to put fit a nut, bolt and washers and so enable the washer to be put in a drill chuck. Instead of static washer on moving glasspaper (where much care must be taken to work gently so as to avoid putting flats on it) you then have rotating washer against static glasspaper. Or you'll just have to do it manually. Shouldn't take long!

The film is re-spooled onto a 620 spool. the 6mm dowel provides as axel, slightly longer than the spool to support the 1/2" washers.

axel length is less than the full thickness of the washers so as to allow the camera's own film supports to rest in the holes.
